Latin Grammy Winners – Afro Bop Alliance
Founded seven years ago in Annapolis by a navy career musician, Joe McCarthy, Afro Bop Alliance has been praised by critics, adored by fans and acknowledged by the music industry as one of the best Latin Jazz bands around today.
The group won a Latin Grammy in 2008 for “Best Latin Jazz Album” and received a Grammy Nomination in 2009 in the same category. This, their third album, was entitled Afro Bop Alliance. For the recording the group swelled to the size of a big band under the name Caribbean Jazz Project featuring mallet man Dave Samuels.
This rare Baltimore performance features core group members: bandleader and percussionist Joe McCarthy, pianist Harry Appelman, trumpet player Tim Stanley, saxophonist Luis Hernandez. and bassist Mike Pope.
The tunes will include red-hot arrangements and slow burns. Among them are “This is for Albert,” “Inner Urge,“ and “Along Came Betty.” Styles will range from Afro-Cuban and Bebop to funk and the program will consist of original music and jazz standards with new twists.
Tickets: $20/$15 students & seniors
