ABOUT MICHAEL AUSTIN:
Locked up for half his life for a crime he did not commit, Michael Austin worked to free his spirit and then himself. On May 5, 1975, at the age of twenty-six, Mr. Austin was sentenced to life plus fifteen years for the 1974 armed robbery and murder of a security guard at an East Baltimore food market. He proclaimed his innocence from the beginning but it took twenty-seven long years to prove that he was indeed innocent.
On December 28, 2001, Michael was freed from 27 years of wrongful imprisonment by a Baltimore Circuit Court Judge who stated that “Michael Austin as an accused was wronged, and no matter the age of the wrong, it remains wrong.” In October of 2003, Governor Robert Ehrlich, Jr. granted Mr. Austin a full pardon. He has been interviewed for radio, television, and newspapers many more times than could possibly be recounted here.
Mr. Austin is a motivational speaker with lectures presented nationally at high schools, churches, prisons and universities such as Georgetown and Princeton to name a few. Michael Austin is an accomplished vocalist, songwriter, keyboard and trumpet player with many years of “live” performance experience. However, unlike other accomplished musicians, much of his experience was received in prison. Mr. Austin has a great love of jazz and releases his spirit through his music. He has two CDs on his own label.
Michael will be performing a benefit concert for his non profit organization "In This Together Development". The goal of our organization is to launch the In This Together Music Program in the Spring of 2011. The In This Together Music Program will be offered to middle school students from the Baltimore City region. Our program targets at-risk youth living in underfunded communities. We are using music as the primary medium for reaching young people and helping them channel their challenges in an alternative way that is positive, structured, and long lasting.
