“Long Pair Bond” the new trio album by Icelandic pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs, marks her move home after spending over a decade in Brooklyn playing mostly in quartets with saxophonists like Tony Malaby, Loren Stillman or Ohad Talmor. Here her disposition here is clearly more Scandinavian. With the trio format comes more space and there is an overall serenity to the album which, like her homeland, is disturbed from time to time by unbridled energy bubbling up under the surface.
Born in Iceland 1970, Sunna Gunnlaugs came to the United States to study jazz at William Paterson College in New Jersey in 1993 and upon graduation moved to Brooklyn, NY where she became a facet of the original jazz scene. She has previously released 6 CDs and has toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, Europe and Japan.
Gunnlaugs returned to Iceland in 2005 where she established her Reykjavik-based trio with bassist Þorgrímur Jónsson and drummer Scott McLemore. She has also lead projects with saxophonists like Norwegian Tore Brunborg and fellow Icelander Óskar Guðjónsson.
