Roy Campbell Jr, or TAZZ, as he is affectionately known among his cohorts, is in addition to being a master trumpeter, composer and arranger, a bandleader, actor, educator and writer.
He was born in Los Angeles and grew up in New York. His musical journey began as a child with piano lessons, initially inspired by his father, whose trumpet was the first one he used.
By the time he entered high school, young Roy was playing flute, recorder, and violin, and began studying trumpet as a high-school senior. In 1970, he graduated with an Associates
Degree in Music from Manhattan Community College, NYC.
Roy's professional career began in the early 70's with successful stints as a contributor and leader in bands to include Spirits of Rhythm, Ensemble Muntu, the Thelonius New World
Orchestra, and his own TAZZ, Pyramid Trio, Other Dimensions In Music, Shades and Colors of Trane, Downtown Horns, and most recently - Spiritual Unity.
Roy leading a trio accompanied by two of his most gifted collaborators - Bassist, Hilliard Greene and Drummer, Michael Wimberly.
Hilliard Greene would humbly refer to himself as a student of music, when in fact his professional expertise has landed him in highly respected teaching positions i.e. full time faculty
member of the NYC Bass Collective; as music director for a Cecil Taylor project (Phtongos); and ensemble work with Gloria Lynne, Jon Hendricks, Karl Berger, Rashied Ali, Leroy Jenkins, Bern Nix,
Charles Gayle, Jack Walrath, Don Pullen, Bobby Watson, Greg Osby, Kenny Barron, and John Hicks to name just a few.
Micheal Wimberly's most recent distinction is his appointment to the Music faculty at Bennington College, VT where he teaches the courses - "Drumming: An Extension of Language" and
"Music Compositions for Dance". Well known on the international innovative music scene, Wimberly has toured extensively worldwide and recorded with Charles Gayle, William Parker,
Sabir Mateen, and Cooper-Moore.
