24U: Multimedia New Music Duos

The film component travels throughout Baltimore and alters IN relative pulse and speed. This show explores the relationship between motion and emotion as experienced through both music and film.

BIOS:

Joshua Anderson

Joshua Anderson is currently a senior at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University where he is studying with Anthony McGill and holds the position of principal clarinet with the Peabody Concert Orchestra. A graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy, Joshua has been involved in several area projects such as the Charm City Collegium and has appeared as both an orchestra member and a soloist with the Baltimore Concerto Orchestra. Joshua has had the honor of performing on both the Young Artists' Performance Series and the Weekend Series of Yale's Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and continues to pursue his passion for chamber music through a variety of different ensembles.

Sara Gabalawi

Twenty-one year old cellist Sara Gabalawi has already performed extensively in the fields of chamber music, orchestra and as a soloist in many cities in both Europe and the United States. She has attended many prestigious music festivals and has performed recitals and concerts in France, Germany, Austria, Romania, the Czech Republic, Poland, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Maine. Currently studying with David Hardy at the Peabody Institute, previous teachers have included Lorne Munroe, Julius Berger, Yvan Chiffoleau, Ohad Bar-David and Derek Barnes and has performed in many masterclasses. Sara holds the Beatrice Feldman Kahn and Raymond S. Kahn Endowed Scholarship at Peabody and plays a French cello made by Victor Joseph Charotte made in 1880.

Courtney Orlando

Heralded by The New York Times as a violinist of “tireless energy and bright tone”, Courtney Orlando specializes in the performance of contemporary and crossover music. She is a founding member of the acclaimed new music ensemble, Alarm Will Sound, which has premiered works by and collaborated with some of the foremost composers of our time, including John Adams, Donnacha Dennehy, Michael Gordon, David Lang, Meredith Monk, Steve Reich, Wolfgang Rihm, and Augusta Read Thomas. She is also a member of Ensemble Signal, the Deviant Septet, and the Praxis string quartet. Courtney is currently on the faculty of the Peabody Conservatory, where she teaches ear training and sight reading and coaches chamber music.

Julia Sheriff

“Julia Sheriff plays the piano with accuracy, intensity, taste and passion. Whenever she plays music, it stays played. Just listen!” –Martin Bresnick A native of Philadelphia, Ms. Sheriff has won numerous prizes in competitions, such as the Aspen Music Festival’s AACA Concerto Competition, Bradshaw and Buono International Piano Competition, and International Young Artists Piano Competition. She has also performed at Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute, the Academy of Music, the Aspen Music Festival and School, Carnegie Hall, the Finchcocks Piano Museum-England, the Kimmel Center’s Verizon Hall, and Yale University’s Norfolk Festival. Ms. Sheriff has been featured on National Public Radio, and has soloed with numerous orchestras, such as the Temple University Symphony Orchestra, York Symphony Orchestra, and Hershey Symphony Orchestra. She is the Assistant Director of the Peabody Children’s Chorus.

John Wilson

Described by the Baltimore Sun as having, “admirable technical confidence and expressive sensitivity,” John Wilson, performs as recitalist, collaborative musician and soloist with orchestra. A member of the contemporary music group “The Lunar Ensemble”, Wilson performed Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire at Baltimore’s Shriver Hall, as well as eight new works by Peabody composers. Recent performances include a recital at Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall; he is also a staff pianist at Baltimore Lyric Opera.

Melissa WImbish

"...simply incredible.....the highlight of the entire evening..." were the quotes from Boulder, Colorado's Daily Camera when describing the young lyric coloratura, Melissa Wimbish in her role as Cunegonde with the University of Colorado’s production of Candide. Melissa Wimbish will make her professional operatic debut as Barbarina with the Baltimore Lyric Opera in Mozart’s masterpiece Le nozze di Figaro in March 2012. She made her international debut in the role of Queen with the first Seoul International Opera Festival in Seoul, Korea under the direction of James Marvel. Under the tutelage of world-renowned soprano Phyllis Bryn-Julson she is currently pursuing her Graduate Performance Diploma in Chamber Music at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University where she is the proud recipient of the Douglas and Hilda Perl Goodwin Endowed Scholarship Fund for Opera.
